Chinatown Families Face New Options as SFUSD Launches Local Special Education Site

The 137-year-old Central Chinese School, established in 1888, continues to accept applications for its 7-week summer program running June 16 to August 1 and for the fall K-12 semester. Enrollment stood at 767 students in 2024, a figure that reflects ongoing interest despite broader shifts in family participation.

Philadelphia’s Chinatown Learning Center runs bilingual early childhood classes in English and Mandarin at the Crane Community Center for new immigrant families. In Boston, the Chinatown Neighborhood Center received $425,000 in federal funding to update early education classrooms and improve infrastructure for Asian and immigrant children. These examples illustrate how targeted dollars reach similar neighborhoods, though San Francisco’s current effort centers on the special education pilot rather than new construction.

Central Chinese School administrators have not announced enrollment targets for 2026, leaving families to monitor application deadlines directly through the school.
