Tampines Town Council Updates Infrastructure Allocation Policy to Expand Local Job Training Sites

The Tampines Town Council approved an update to its infrastructure allocation policy on 6 July 2026, shifting S$85 million from the town’s annual operating budget to the construction of two new skills training centres and an extension of the Tampines MRT feeder bus network.

This change follows the release of the council’s mid-year financial statement, which showed a projected 12 per cent rise in local unemployment claims for residents aged 25 to 45 compared with the same period in 2025.

Changes to daily services for residents

Under the revised policy, the new training centres will be located adjacent to the existing Tampines Community Centre and the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council boundary, offering certification courses in logistics coordination and data entry that run for eight weeks. Residents who complete the courses will receive priority placement on a job-matching list maintained by the council’s employment office, which currently lists 1,400 openings from companies based in the Tampines Regional Centre.

The bus network extension adds three new stops along Tampines Avenue 7, cutting average travel time to the nearest industrial park from 35 minutes to 22 minutes for commuters using the service during peak hours.

Next steps in implementation

Construction on the first training centre is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with the second site and bus route changes expected to open in March 2027. The council has stated that quarterly progress reports will be published on its website and presented at the next town hall meeting in October.

Policy analysts note that the allocation draws directly from line items already approved in the 2026 Tampines Town Council Budget Paper, which set aside 18 per cent of operating revenue for employment-related infrastructure projects.
