Summer League Sign-Ups Drive Crowds to Chinatown Community Clubs
Drop-in sessions and upcoming sports league registrations at the local community center reflect steady interest in shared activity among residents.
How we reported this
Registration for several sports leagues opens next week at the Chinatown community center, with volleyball and adult sports programs scheduled to begin later in the summer. The July 21 start date for those leagues follows a period of consistent use of the center’s drop-in offerings.
Community sports programs matter now because the summer schedule runs from June 22 through September 6, giving residents a defined window to join activities before fall registration begins. Many participants return year after year, and the center’s location next to the public library and near restaurants makes it convenient for people already in the area.
Daily Sessions Keep Regulars Coming Back
Drop-in play at the center includes adult badminton on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., adult pickleball on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. and on Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and adult volleyball on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. plus Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Table tennis runs on multiple days for adults and youth, while family open gym is available on Saturday afternoons. These sessions require only a free Quick Card obtained at the front desk after creating an Active Net account.
Income-qualified residents can apply for scholarships covering 50 to 90 percent of program fees before signing up. The center also lists a 50-and-up group that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. and a Chinese mahjong and chess gathering each weekday from noon to 4 p.m. The fitness room stays open during all regular hours, and the gym is set aside for teens on several afternoons.
Next Steps for Interested Residents
Fall registration dates are already posted, with citywide athletics and community-center programs opening August 11. Residents who want to join current summer drop-ins or prepare for the July 21 league sign-up can visit the center at 719 8th Ave S or call (206) 233-0042 during operating hours. The summer activity brochure, available online, lists the full schedule on page 20 and notes that the facility will be closed July 3 and September 7.
Those planning to attend should arrive early on busy days, as space in the gym and multipurpose rooms is limited. The center’s kitchen and meeting rooms support occasional partner events, though most daily activity centers on the listed court and table sports.
