Local programs anchor the buildout
The Chinatown Broadband Cooperative runs a mesh node on the roof of the community center at 777 Jackson Street that serves 340 small offices in the surrounding blocks. Two blocks east, the incubator at 888 Clay Street uses the same city fiber to test edge-computing prototypes for logistics clients.
City records show average paid residential speeds reached 1.4 gigabits downstream by May 2026, with installation fees capped at $49 for any address inside the original 12-block historic district. Business accounts pay $79 monthly for the two-gigabit tier, a rate set in the 2024 franchise agreement that has held steady despite equipment cost increases.
Next steps for firms and residents
Companies can apply for a free speed audit through the cooperative by July 31, after which the city will prioritize remaining alleys for conduit work. Households already on the network can upgrade to the new 5-gigabit option starting August 1 at the same address on Jackson Street.
