Temperature, Light, Noise: Jurong East Residents Lose Sleep Nightly
Jurong East residents face daily disruptions from heat, street lighting and traffic sounds that cut into nightly rest.
How we reported this
More than half of adults living near Jurong East MRT station report waking at least three times a night because of temperature swings, bright lights or passing vehicles.
The pattern has sharpened this year as evening temperatures in the neighbourhood have stayed above 28 degrees Celsius on 42 nights since January. Urban planners note that high-rise blocks along Jurong Gateway Road trap heat longer than older estates, while 24-hour bus services on Boon Lay Way keep headlights and engine noise constant after midnight.
Local programmes target the three factors
The Jurong East Community Centre began a six-week sleep workshop series in May that teaches residents to install blackout film on bedroom windows and to set air-conditioner timers before 10 pm. At the same time, the ActiveSG hub inside Jurong East Stadium offers evening yoga sessions that finish by 8 pm so participants can return home before streetlights intensify. Both sites recorded full bookings within 48 hours of registration opening.
Noise remains the hardest element to control. Data released last month by the National Environment Agency showed average night-time sound levels on Jurong East Street 21 reached 52 decibels between 11 pm and 5 am, above the 45-decibel threshold linked to fragmented sleep in a 2025 National University of Singapore study of 1,200 residents.
Practical steps that fit daily routines
Participants who attended the community-centre sessions reported using white-noise machines priced from S$28 at the nearby JEM mall and keeping bedroom thermostats at 24 degrees Celsius. Those adjustments produced an average 45-minute increase in uninterrupted sleep after two weeks, according to follow-up forms collected by the centre. Residents can also request free light-meter checks through the Jurong East Town Council hotline to identify windows that need shading before the next hot spell arrives.
